چکیده

This document is the final report on the burns diagnosis studies conducted by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The studies utilized image processing technology developed for use in planetary, lunar, and earth surface analysis. The work was conducted with the cooperation of the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California Medical Center and was performed at that facility. Special photographic or television image analysis is shown to be a potentially useful technique to assist the physician in the early diagnosis of thermal burn injury. This report presents a background on the medical and physiological problems of burns and discusses the pro posed methodology for burns diagnosis from both the theoretical and clinical points of view. The television/computer system constructed to accomplish this analysis is described, and the clinical results are discussed. .*PRCEDING. PA6E ILANK NOT FIMED

The mortality of burn patients remains high in spite of the advances made in treating initial burn shock, controlling burn wound infection, and providing nutritional support. Smoke inhalation is recognized as a strong determinant of morbidity and mortality in burn patients, and most burn patients die because of associated inhalation injury. There are many reports on this combined injury (cutane...

Inhalation Injury as a Prognostic Factor for Mortality in Burn Patients

Inhalation injury is an acute respiratory tract insult caused by steam or toxic inhalants such as fumes, gases, and mists. Inhalation injury may occur without cutaneous burn injury, though the two injuries usually occur together. Despite increasing clinical interest in the problem of inhalation injury over the last few decades, the pathophysiology of inhalation injury remains poorly understood ...

Unusual Presentation of Orf Disease on a Thermal Burn Scar

Introduction Orf disease is a viral disease of sheep and goats that can appear in humans too. The usual presentation is in sites that have direct contact. Clinical manifestation of Orf disease may be unusual in burn patients. Case Report In this case report, we described a rare presentation of Orf disease on a burn scar of a ...

A pilot evaluation study of high resolution digital thermal imaging in the assessment of burn depth.

Thermal imaging is a tool that can be used to determine burn depth. We have revisited the use of this technology in the assessment of burns and aim to establish if high resolution, real-time technology can be practically used in conjunction with clinical examination to determine burn depth. 11 patients with burns affecting upper and lower limbs and the anterior and posterior trunk were included...

Invisible metallic microfiber in clothing presents unrecognized MRI risk for cutaneous burn.

SUMMARY We report a case of a thermal burn that occurred during MR imaging likely caused by invisible silver-embedded microfibers in the fabric of an undershirt. As the prevalence of fabric containing nondetectable metallic microfiber increases in athletic and "tech" clothing, the importance of having patients change into safe facility-provided garments before MR imaging is emphasized.
